Official Hulu app lands on the Android Market, and it’s everything you hoped it would be

Completely out of left field, this morning Hulu released an official app for Android. The app is free to download but requires a Hulu Plus subscription to view most of the content. And the app will initially be available only for the following devices:

  • Nexus One
  • Nexus S
  • HTC Inspire 4G
  • Motorola Droid II
  • Motorola Droid X
  • Motorola Atrix

If you don’t have one of these devices, hang in there. Hulu said they “expect to add to the number of Android smartphones and will be making additional device announcements throughout the year.”

The app itself is everything you could ever want from a Hulu app. The company didn’t cut any corners for its Android app, and it shows. It comes with all the following features:

  • Watch all TV episodes available from Hulu
  • Watch full series runs or back seasons of classic shows like The X-Files, Arrested Development, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Law and Order
  • Search and browse for shows and videos and manage your queue directly from your supported Android device
  • Watch movies from Miramax and the Criterion Collection, including Pulp Fiction, The English Patient, Breathless, Modern Times and hundreds more
  • Resume play from where you left off on other Hulu Plus devices, including your computer and select mobile phones, tablets, internet-connected TVs and Blu-ray players
  • Watch over WiFi, 3G and 4G

That last feature might be the most important of all. It’s good to see Hulu didn’t choose to make its app WiFi-only. Although I’m sure some carriers aren’t going to like that very much. For those of you on a tiered data plan, you might want to think twice before watching a full season of Arrested Development using your carrier’s wireless network.

If you have one of the devices I mentioned above and use Hulu on a daily basis, you can download the Hulu app right here. Then, come back and tell us everything about it. Do you like it or not? Is it worth 8 bucks a month? How’s the streaming quality? And most importantly, would you move to an unlimited wireless network (Sprint) to be able to consume as much data as you want?
